Industrial commission upholds council lifeguard decision
  • Thursday 06 September 2012

The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) has today supported Sunshine Coast Council’s approach in transitioning its Lifeguard Service employees to Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ).

It said that it was satisfied that council has met its obligations in relation to the Certified Agreement which applies to council’s lifeguard employees.

In summary, the commissioner made the following main points:

  • Council has met the provision of its Certified Agreement with staff.
  • Council will include staff and union representatives in its Transition Committee.
  • QIRC did not see itself as having an ongoing role in this matter.

The decision will allow council to achieve its objective of continuing the high standard of safety services offered at our beaches while improving the career prospects of council’s employed lifeguards.

Council now looks forward to working with staff, the Australian Workers Union and its members to progress today’s decision and more broadly, the decision of council to partner with SLSQ and to use our joint expertise to take beach safety services to the next level.
