Island community finds its centre

Kawana Island is to have its own community centre – and it is in a perfectly prime position.

Sunshine Coast Council has entered into a contract to buy the former property sales office at Double Bay, division 4 councillor Chris Thompson said.

"The building is next to the popular Montego’s on the Bay restaurant," he said.

"It has 220 square metres of space; it is flexible with small and large meeting rooms as well as a large outdoor area and it is disability-compliant.

"It is in the most central location of Kawana Island, with parking, access to the beach, barbecue areas and the pontoon."

Cr Thompson said council tried to buy the building some years ago for this purpose.

"The property price sought was unreasonable at the time," he said.

"But it was re-offered recently to council at a revised price."

The transaction is expected to be settled this month, with the building expected to be available to the community by July, Cr Thompson said.

"This is a great outcome for the community," he said.

The purchase will be funded through an infrastructure agreement with developer Stockland.
