It’s time to thank our volunteers

Volunteering Sunshine Coast will hold a special race day on Sunday 17 May to honour its loyal legion of volunteers – and Mayor Bob Abbot will be there to offer his personal thanks.

Sunshine Coast volunteers can obtain free entry passes to Corbould Park for the race day, which is the largest event planned for the coast as part of National Volunteers Week from 11-17 May.

Cr Abbott said volunteers were unsung heroes in the community who deserved a big thank you for their selfless efforts to help others.

“There are hundreds of volunteers around the Coast who donate their time and energy to helping others and never ask for anything in return,” the Mayor said.

“These are ordinary people making extraordinary contributions to the community and they deserve to be recognised.

“I congratulate all volunteers for their efforts and encourage members of the community to get involved in volunteering and make a difference in the lives of others.”

Council is providing a free morning tea for volunteers attending the race day, which has been organised by Volunteering Sunshine Coast.

Edwin Hammet of Mt Coolum has been a volunteer with Coolum District Coast Care for the past four years and said he gets great satisfaction from helping to preserve the local environment.

“I work on a variety of projects ranging from weed removal and sand dune restoration to re-planting of local native species and turtle conservation,” Edwin said.

“It’s worthwhile donating some of your time to making a contribution to a worthy cause - however small it may seem, it all makes a difference.

“Along the way I’ve made some good friends with people that have come from a variety of backgrounds who have all been brought together by a common interest.”

The race day is open to everyone, and free tickets are available to volunteers and their families (valued at $10).

The theme for Volunteer Week is “Volunteers: Everyday People, Extraordinary Contribution”.
