Forty finalists, selected from more than 100 entries, will be on display at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Local Artists - Local Content Art Prize was an important showcase for local talent and an increasingly significant exhibition on the Sunshine Coast’s arts calendar.

“Now in just its third year, the Local Artists - Local Content Art Prize offers prizes totalling $7500,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The Friends of the Regional Gallery Caloundra have done a fantastic job creating this art prize specifically for our local artists.

“These exhibitions encourage artists to produce new artworks and are important steps in developing an artist’s reputation.

“Previous winners have included the remarkably talented Gabi Timm, Pam Walpole, Beatrice Prost and Peta Boyce.

“I look forward to learning who this year’s winners will be at the official announcement tonight.”

Friends of the Caloundra Regional Gallery Inc. president Marie Pigott said the quality of entries in the 2016 art prize was outstanding, encompassing everything from traditional to contemporary styles.

“The works depict the Sunshine Coast in all its glory, including scenes of the sea, the hinterland, the built environment, local wildlife and more,” she said.

“This year a three dimensional award has been added and we are delighted to have amazing works from our local ceramic and jewellery artists including Johanna De Maine, Jan Roebuck and Phil Willy, vying for the prize.

“It’s wonderful to have the support of local businesses Mary Henzell Investments and Local Agent Real Estate that are sponsoring our Local Artists-Local Content Exhibition this year.

“This Art Award provides a great opportunity for our talented local artists to be recognised and to be able to exhibit their work in a regional gallery to a national audience, and for gallery visitors to invest in an amazing piece of local art to display in their home, office or business.

“All 40 finalist pieces will be available for purchase.”

The Local Artists - Local Content winners will be announced at the official opening tonight, Thursday, October 6 at 6pm. The judge for this year’s prize is respected Sunshine Coast arts worker Cathy Money.

The community also has the chance to vote for their favourite artwork with the People’s Choice Award winner to be announced on Friday, October 28.
