Local artist to carve up award
  • Wednesday 31 October 2012

Sunshine Coast Council has commissioned local timber artist Ben Culley to design and construct the 2013 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.

Culley’s two companies, Infinity Eco-Designs and icarve showcase his fun and unique timber art and furniture inspired by our natural landscape.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said procuring the work of local artists through programs such as the Australia Day Awards demonstrates council’s commitment to nurturing the region’s creative talent while buying local wherever possible stimulates our economy.

"Local art being used to say thank you to our local heroes is one of the best methods for this council and this community to both showcase and highlight the value we place on this region and the people who call the Coast home," he said.

Council will host the fifth annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards Ceremony on Friday 25 January 2013 awarding winners in seven categories.

Mayor Jamieson said award recipients are the people we call local heroes – it is their community contribution that is celebrated at this award ceremony.

"The awards provide an opportunity for the community to nominate people who have made a contribution to the region with their achievements being honoured and publicly recognised," he said.

"So I encourage you to take the time to nominate these people, who may be your neighbour, a friend or an associate, and say thank you."

Nominations close 28 December 2012 for individuals and organisations within the community who are working towards making the Sunshine Coast a better place to live.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Citizen of the Year
  • Community
  • Creative
  • Environment
  • Sport and Recreation.
