Renowned Sunshine Coast glass artist Lucas Salton today presented a piece of his work to Mayor Mark Jamieson.
The piece will be presented to the Mayor of Xiamen at a banquet towards the end of Mayor Jamieson’s visit to the coastal Chinese city.
“Tomorrow (Saturday) I am leaving for Beijing to represent the Sunshine Coast on a state development and investment mission to Beijing, Guangzhou and Foshan,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“On Wednesday, I will meet up with Cr Jenny McKay and nine representatives of Sunshine Coast businesses and educational institutions in Xiamen, where we have organised a number of meetings with Xiamen City officials, Chinese businesses and potential investors.
“It is customary to present small gifts at most of these meetings, as the Chinese themselves do, and Lucas’s wonderful piece of art will be presented to Xiamen Mayor Liu Keqing at a mayoral banquet next Thursday.”
The Mayor said Lucas Salton’s work was well-known throughout the Coast, and he had been previously commissioned by council to provide public art pieces as part of Noosa Junction’s revitalisation and in public space at Coolum Beach.
“This mission to Xiamen will be the first step in maturing our nine-year friendship and sister-city relationship with the city of 3.6 million people,” he said.
“Xiamen, a coastal city facing the Straits of Taiwan, began as a smaller domestic holiday destination which has now diversified its economy as one of China’s designated Western Zone Economies set up to interface with the West.
“While it will take some time to show major economic results, this is an important first step in that new relationship.”
