Sunshine Coast Council has reinforced its support of the Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, with the signing of the first official Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations.
Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the signing of the MOU was a formal acknowledgement of the valuable work undertaken by the group.
“In a bid to further strengthen the everyday working relationship between the Friends and council, a formal MOU was developed to outline how the two will work together to conserve and enhance the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden into the future,” Cr McKay said.
“The MOU describes how we will work together towards ensuring the Garden and Maroochy Arts and Ecology Centre remain invaluable community facilities that generate a strong sense of place.
“The Botanic Garden would not be the unique haven it is without the significant contribution of time, effort and passion from the Friends.”
The 150-strong group of volunteers are highly active and their significant efforts include providing garden and construction crews, which maintain the 150 hectare site.
The Friends act as guides, provide information to garden visitors, and host groups on guided walks providing an overview of the history of the garden.
They are also actively involved in fundraising to assist council in the development and maintenance of the gardens.
The group have been in existence for 19 years and regularly welcome new members.
Potential volunteers interested in hosting guided walks and acting as information hosts are particularly welcome and encouraged to contact council to find out more information.
The Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden is located in Tanawha and showcases plants native to the Sunshine Coast region.
The Garden also houses the The Maroochy Arts and Ecology Centre, which is a specialised arts and ecology interpretative facility. The Arts and Ecology Centre incorporates areas that allow community access to hold meetings, creative workshops and social activities.
