Mayor at Youth Forum

Mayor Mark Jamieson today addressed the Youth Sector Change Drivers Group Forum at University of the Sunshine Coast.

The group is a consortium of school principals, the Department of Education, Training and Employment, th university and a range of youth training and apprenticeship organisations who combine their efforts to develop youth pathways to employment and further study.

Mayor Jamieson reported on progress since the previous forum last February, highlighting yesterday's launch of The Work Shop recruitment centre at the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital site in Kawana.

"Eighty-one people have already foudn work through The Work Shop to date," he told the audience.

"This will increase rapidly as constructions starts to ramp up, with about 11,000 workers expected to work on the site across the life of the construction period, and 1800 workers on-site during the peak period of activity between now and next year.

"Our aim is to have as many local people involved in the building of the hospital and the surrounding precinct – also to have as many as possible employed by the hospital on its opening day in late 2016," he said.

The consortium has taken on board the aims of the Regional Economic Development Strategy wit regard to the identified sevn high-value industries the strategy seeks to develop on the Sunshine Coast.
