Mayor Mark Jamieson has congratulated the two Sunshine Coast swimmers who have won gold in the London Olympics pool.

"As the Mayor of this region I couldn’t be prouder – to have half of the victorious women’s 4x100 metres women’s relay team is a great accomplishment," Mayor Jamieson said.

"Twenty-five year old Melanie Schlanger and 18 year old Brittany Elmlsie are great ambassadors for the Sunshine Coast – and I congratulate them both.

"The talented swimmers, both originally from Nambour, have overcome some hardships along the way, which makes their win even more special.

"I hope their medals are the first of many for them and the region, with the Sunshine Coast having connections to a dozen Olympic athletes at the Games.

"I’d like to wish our other competitors the best of luck over the next fortnight – I get a feeling there’s going to be a few sleepless nights ahead for all of us."
