Mayor to assist neighbouring SEQ councils
  • Thursday 13 January 2011

Mayor Bob Abbot is to head off on a round trip to visit the mayors of Ipswich, Lockyer and Somerset councils in his role as Senior Vice President of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).

As Sunshine Coast Council embarks upon its recovery phase following the floods, Cr Abbot said he was now in a position to meet with some mayors whose regions have been afflicted more markedly than the Coast has, to discuss what coordinated action can be taken in this time of crisis.

Sunshine Coast Council has previously stated it would support other council regions affected by the flood by way of coordinated assistance through the LGAQ.

“I will be offering support and assistance on behalf of the LGAQ,” Cr Abbot said.

“While the Sunshine Coast has suffered substantially from the floods, we are in a much more fortunate position than some of our neighbours.

“It is imperative the best wishes, support and assistance of Coast residents is delivered to those in need.

“We have been waiting for the call – and it has come.”

Cr Abbot will be away for four to five days but will remain in constant touch with the Coast.

During his absence, Division 4 Councillor Chris Thompson will step into his role on the Disaster Management Group.
