Mow the lawn then roll the clippings to the kerb and then forget about them—Sunshine Coast Council’s new Coast-wide garden waste has arrived and is making everyday life a little simpler.
The $72 per year fortnightly service started on Monday 1 November and is available for the first time, right across the Sunshine Coast.
Environment Portfolio holder Councillor Keryn Jones said that she anticipates the number of services doubling when residents notice their neighbours using the new bins.
“We’ve had nearly 4000 people sign up for the new service, which means people obviously want an easy way to get rid of garden waste without resorting to using the rubbish bin,” Cr Jones said.
“The service is a really convenient way to get rid of garden waste—the bonus is we all get a better environmental outcome and landfill space is saved.
“The new service is a direct outcome from council’s waste minimisation strategy, ‘Our Sunshine Coast, it’s too good to waste’, which identified the need to increase organic recycling on the Coast.”
To sign up for the service, residents can contact council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272 or for more information, including pick up calendars, log onto www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
