One of Australia’s most popular celebrity scientists, Professor Veena Sahsjwalla, will speak at Sunshine Coast Council’s Living Smart Glossies Awards on 15 June.
Joining the awards’ MC and gardening guru, Costa Georgiadis, Veena will share stories about her time as a judge on The New Inventors and discuss the importance of sustainability.
Veena is a metallurgical engineer known for inventing an environmentally-friendly way to recycle plastics and rubber tyres in steel making.
Veena said that innovation simply comes from imagining a better way of doing things.
"Growing up in India, I watched many communities thrive from other people’s waste," she said.
"I began to think about what it would take to convert "rubbish" into something more valuable."
Nominations for Sunshine Coast residents, businesses and community groups close on Monday 14 May 2012.
This year a new award for Affordable Living will recognise excellence in sustainable building design and construction.
Other awards include Resource Saver, Edible Landscapes, Sustainable Transport, Living Smart Solutions, EnviroBusiness and Greening the Arts.
The 2012 Living Smart Glossies Awards are hosted by Sunshine Coast Council and sponsored by University of the Sunshine Coast, TAFE, Noosa Biosphere, Seven Network, and Sunshine Coast Daily.
