It's all systems go in readiness for this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in Mooloolaba and rain won't dampen the spirits of Sunshine Coast Council's events team and the dozens of other workers set to make this year a success!
Council is committed to providing a free, safe, fun and family friendly New Year’s Eve community event in Mooloolaba and although the recent weather conditions and transport issues have caused some added challenges, the countdown is on for an evening of fun and entertainment at this alcohol, drug and glass free event.
While there have been minor glitches accessing public transport, Sunbus has been successful in putting a plan together for New Year’s Eve buses running on the Caloundra/ Mooloolaba/ Maroochydore route and the Noosa /Maroochydore / Mooloolaba route. Sunbus will announce full details shortly.
Division 4 Councillor Chris Thompson said council would like to thank Sunbus for its great efforts to support the Sunshine Coast by making these services available at such a key time.
“In addition to the Sunbus service, council has also secured a limited number of event shuttle buses to assist with moving people throughout the evening, transporting passengers to and from the Mooloolaba New Year’s Eve event,” Cr Thompson said.
“Please be mindful that whilst Sunbus is offering a reliable timetable, they have indicated they will not have the capacity to carry the numbers normally carried on New Year’s Eve.
“Extra patience is a pre requisite for anyone planning on accessing the free Sunbus and shuttle bus services or catching a cab as there are bound to be lengthy waiting periods and as long as people understand, relax and enjoy the company of others in the queue, it should be a great night.”
Three designated park ‘n’ ride sites providing shuttle bus collection points will be picking up and dropping off at the carpark on Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba (near the event) from 3.30pm until 2am.
The shuttle bus points are located at:
- Sunshine Coast University (bus terminal interchange)
- Kawana Shopping World (bus terminal, outside the food court)
- Cornmeal Parade Car Park (behind Hungry Jack's, Maroochydore).
While security guards will be on site at each park ‘n’ ride to disperse the crowds, Cr Thompson said that parents need to make arrangements to collect their children at a pre arranged time and place.
"The responsibility falls on each parent to ensure they make suitable arrangements to collect their children / young people following the event," Cr Thompson said.
"Council is proud to produce a great evening's entertainment, but on a night as big as New Year’s Eve as parents we have a duty of care to look after our own kids and ensure they are safe.
"If you are allowing your under 18s to attend, then at the very least make arrangements for their collection."
And with a great line up of local and national headline artists such as the Green Room, The Marsdens Lee's, Josh Pyke and Mental as Anything, there's something for everyone.
Council is also proud to support other great community events on the coast at Caloundra and Tewantin Harbour.
All three events will conclude with fireworks:
Mooloolaba: 8.30pm for those early finishers or midnight for those planning to stay on a bit longer,
Noosa Marina, Tewantin: 9pm and midnight, and
