Sunshine Coast Council has announced a new environment award in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize that will excite artists across the nation,

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the aim of the new Sunshine Coast Environment Art Award, offering a cash prize of $10,000, is to connect people to the values of the Sunshine Coast natural environment through art.

“We’re striving for the Sunshine Coast to be Australia’s most sustainable region— vibrant, green and diverse. Understanding and appreciating our environmental values is a big part of that journey and art is a great way to do that,” Cr McKay said.

“We’re anticipating some great entries. The Sunshine Coast Art Prize has grown to become one of the nation’s most significant regional visual arts awards with over $125,000 for emerging and professional artists of all mediums.

“In 2015, the development of the Inaugural Environment Art Award Prize has been supported by Council through the Living Smart program and offers a cash prize of $10,000 to one of the finalists across selected categories and awards within the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.”

Artworks should depict the natural values and attributes of the Sunshine Coast Council local government area, while connecting people to the values of the Coast’s natural environment.

Artworks can explore local environmental themes and issues or the relationship between people and the Sunshine Coast natural environment.

Entries which depict natural landscapes and native flora and fauna of the Sunshine Coast will be highly regarded.

A professional panel will select works from across various regional Sunshine Coast art prizes during September and October 2015 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

The winner will receive $10,000 cash with the work being acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.
