New laws to manage election signage

Sunshine Coast Council today endorsed changes to local laws that will better manage election signage, which will be in place in time for the Federal Election in September.

The proposed changes apply to Local Law No. 1 (Administration) 2011 and Subordinate Local Law No. 1 (Administration) 2011 and include a new definition for an election sign and a schedule outlining the requirements for the display of an election sign.

Corporate Planning portfolio chair Councillor Christian Dickson said the intent of the changes will see improved management of election signage across the Sunshine Coast.

“These changes will make election signage less intrusive to the community and level the playing field for candidates,” Cr Dickson said.

“Candidates will now only be able to display election advertising on private land, and then only with the express permission of the private land owner.

“The changes also specify a maximum number of signs allowed for each level of government, and a maximum size.

“Candidates will also need to advise council of the location of all election signs displayed.

“Separate prescribed parameters for the display of election signs for a local government election for the Noosa Shire Council were also added.”

An online form will be available for candidates on council’s website. Under the proposed amendments to council’s local laws, election signs can only be displayed 28 days prior to the day of the election.

Community consultation on the proposed amendment will be for six days, to ensure that the new laws are in place for the upcoming Federal Election in September 2013. The timing will also align with council’s requirement to undertake State agency checks during the same period.
