Individuals, businesses and community groups who promote sustainability in the way they work, live and play are encouraged to nominate for the Sunshine Coast Council’s 2010 Glossies Awards when they open on Wednesday, 5 May 2010.
Environment Portfolio holder councillor Keryn Jones said the Living Smart “Glossies” Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the communities’ achievements in sustainable building design, land use, sustainable transport and environmentally friendly business.
“The awards recognise the efforts of those in the community who have taken it upon themselves to make a difference,” Cr Jones said.
“Home-owners, builders, designers, architects, community groups, landscapers and business owners who make a significant contribution to sustainable living and business on the Sunshine Coast are all invited to nominate.
“You can even nominate on behalf of someone else, as long they agree to the nomination.
“This year we have made some changes to the awards, including separate sub-categories for industry and residents/community groups, an improved nomination process and the addition of new categories.
“This year’s event is going to be bigger, better and more Glossy!”
The award categories are:
- The Golden Glossy—Excellence in Sustainable Design Award
- Resource Saver Award
- Edible Landscape Award
- Sustainable Transport Award
- Living Smart Solutions Award (New)
- Ecobiz Award (New)
The Glossies Awards are named after the iconic Glossy Black Cockatoo, which is a vulnerable local bird species. Through encouraging sustainable living on the Sunshine Coast, council hopes to contribute to the long-term survival of this and many other iconic local species.
Nominations close on 7 June 2010. To nominate, log on to living smart website or contact council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272.
The Living Smart “Glossies” Awards will be held on Saturday 26 June at the Events Centre, Caloundra, following the LivingSmart and EcoBiz expo.
