OzSki secures second state titles

The waterski spotlight will shine brightly on Coolum next month when OzSki Resort at Quanda Lakes hosts the Queensland state titles.

Divisional councillor Steve Robinson said the event would provide a big boost to local business and add to OzSki’s reputation as one of Australia’s best facilities for waterski events.

“What a great vote of confidence – it’s the second state titles in two years, and now OzSki has the nationals in its sights,” Cr Robinson said.

“It’s such a wonderful achievement to have a competition of this calibre in our own backyard – and the facility will only get better with the owners to spend $600,000 on upgrades in coming years.

“The OzSki Resort is a great asset for this region – and I’m looking forward to the first Australian titles – it can only be a matter of time.”

Former world water-skiing champion and owner of OzSki Resort Emma Sheers said it was an exciting time for the sport on the Sunshine Coast.

“This is Queensland’s biggest event, attracting competitors from all over the state,” Ms Sheers said.

“Last year we had more than 90 competitors converge on Coolum for the state titles, and they bring with them their families and friends, so you’re talking about drawing hundreds of people to Coolum.

“We’re very excited to bring skiers to the Sunshine Coast and showing them the best of what the Coast has to offer while showcasing a first class waterski event.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to continue to develop our site in preparation for being able to host an event like the National Championships.

“We have already hosted a successful Central Region event in November of last year and this will be our second state titles.”

Waterski Queensland president Mick Campbell said OzSki Resort was an ideal venue for the state titles.

“It’s a great facility with a great future – and it would be fantastic to see it host the nationals in the near future,” Mr Campbell said.

“In the state titles, skiers will compete in all three tournament events – Slalom, Trick and Jump – before heading to the National Championships in Darwin at Easter.

“The State Championships will be held on the 29th and 30th of March, everyone is welcome to come out and watch the titles, entry is free.”
