Portfolios with greater focus on economic development
  • Saturday 23 June 2012

Sunshine Coast Council is expected to adopt a portfolio system with a greater focus on the region’s economic development.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said a report to be put forward to the next ordinary council meeting on June 28 will recommend key focus areas for each councillor.

"We need a sustainable community, a sustainable environment, and a sustainable economy – this will help make that happen," he said.

"I’m confident it will be the right mix of the right people in the right portfolios to make a real difference to the region.

"I think it’s important I take the lead on economic development – I made it my top priority in the election, and I’m determined to develop a stronger economy.

"I will welcome the support of councillors Robinson, O’Pray and Cox in the portfolio.

"Deputy Mayor Chris Thompson was a well respected Finance Portfolio councillor and I am keen for him to continue his focus in that area."

Mayor Jamieson said all councillors will have important roles.

"The budget will be adopted next week, we will soon have our portfolio responsibilities; we will get on with the job," he said

"The portfolio areas reflect the strategic priorities of the council for the next four years – and objectives will be developed and reported on.

"Councillors have an obligation to represent their division, but just as important, they need to be working for the region as a whole.

"These roles will ensure we are all working towards an even better Sunshine Coast – continuing the unity which has already become a hallmark of this council," Cr Jamieson said.
