Sunshine Coast Positive Ageing Strategy 2011-2016 will be launched by Sunshine Coast Council on Tuesday 23 August at Sunshine 60's Multicultural Awareness Expo.

will be launched by Sunshine Coast Council on Tuesday 23 August at Sunshine 60's Multicultural Awareness Expo.

Community Policy and Programs Policy Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she was delighted to be officially launching the strategy.

"The purpose of the strategy is to understand and respond to the changing needs of ageing residents and acknowledge the positive contributions they make to the region," Cr McKay said.

"The strategy outlines council’s commitment to working with key agencies and the community to build strong, connected and resilient age-friendly Sunshine Coast communities."

The strategy has been developed from extensive engagement with older people, along with the broader community, service providers, community organisations, government agencies and various areas across council.

The strategy includes an action plan that identifies the key commitments from council and its partners to the needs of older people over the life of the strategy.

The strategy also takes an intergenerational approach, working to increase the recognition and respect of older people in the broader community and encourage opportunities for older and younger people to connect.

"Council chose to launch the strategy during Seniors Week as it is a celebration of the valuable contribution older people make in our communities. Sunshine Coast Positive Ageing Strategy promotes a positive attitude towards older people and ageing and Seniors Week reinforces that message on a national level," Cr McKay said.

"The Sunshine 60 and Better Group offered to host the launch and we were happy to partner with them as they have been a key part of the consultation in the development of the strategy and are an invaluable resource for the older community on the Sunshine Coast."

The expo will run from 9.30am to 2.30pm with entertainment and activities including a welcome to country with the Gubbi Gubbi dancers, belly dancing, tai chi performance, Japanese origami and multi cultural dancing.
