Raising the flag for NAIDOC Week
  • Saturday 03 July 2010

The Sunshine Coast Council is proud to lend its support to help celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Flag Raising Ceremony is taking place at Nambour Courtyard (in front of Council Chambers), corner of Currie and Bury Streets, Nambour, at 10am on Monday 5 July 2010.

Lyndon Davis will present a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ and didgeridoo performance followed by the Master of Ceremonies, Mr Corey Czok, acknowledging the traditional owners of our land.

Prominent Indigenous citizens Beverley Hand and Bella Hartnell will be involved in the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2010 is ‘Unsung Heroes – Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way’.

During NAIDOC Week, a number of activities are happening throughout the Sunshine Coast region, including the NAIDOC Festival scheduled for Sunday 11 July 10am – 3pm at Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore.

No special arrangements have been made with regards to parking, so we encourage patrons to come early or to utilise public transport where possible for both the Flag Raising Ceremony at Nambour Courtyard and the NAIDOC Day Event at Cotton Tree Park.

For more information regarding both the Flag Raising Ceremony and NAIDOC Day Event, please contact Sunshine Coast Council’s Sue Pele on 5441 8218.
