Sunshine Coast Council will lend its support to help celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at the formal opening of NAIDOC Week 2011 in Nambour on Friday.
The community is invited to the special Flag Raising Ceremony - which will mark the Region’s opening of the national week of activities - to be held at the Nambour Courtyard (in front of Council Chambers), cnr of Currie and Bury Streets, Nambour at 10am, Friday 1 July 2011.
The theme for NAIDOC Week 2011 is ‘Change – The next step is ours’.
Special guest speakers at the ceremony will be Gubbi Gubbi representative, Lyndon Davis, National NAIDOC committee member, Jason Field and Aboriginal artist, De Greer-Yindimincarlie.
Sunshine Coast Council Young Citizen of the Year 2010, Bianca Bond will be Master of Ceremonies at the celebration and Mayor Bob Abbot will also address the gathering.
During NAIDOC Week (3 to 10 July), a number of activities are happening throughout the Sunshine Coast region, including the NAIDOC Festival scheduled for Sunday 10 July from 10am to 3pm at Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore.
No special arrangements have been made for parking, so we encourage patrons to come early or to use public transport where possible for both the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Nambour Courtyard and the NAIDOC Day Event at Cotton Tree Park.
