Regional economies to benefit from united approach

Economic development boards across the region will soon unite under the banner of Sunshine Coast Enterprises (SCE).

Division 12 councillor and Economic Development and Council Entrepreneurship Portfolio holder, Cr Lew Brennan, said council discussed the current structure for delivery of economic development and requested a report on the formation of a peak regional economic development board to oversight and consult with council.

The report is to be based on the work already started by Caloundra City Enterprises Pty Ltd, Maroochy Economic Development Advisory Board and the Noosa Economic Sector Board on behalf of the Noosa Biosphere Board Pty Ltd.

“These boards have worked toward common regional goals while also preserving and enhancing local and place-based initiatives,” Cr Brennan said.

“The track record of each of the three existing entities is quite impressive, and council supports the concept of one regional voice to ensure a stronger future for businesses across the region.”

SCE today received acknowledgement from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for its achievements in driving and facilitating economic development across the region as well as its best practice governance principles and procedures.

Current council-funded projects include a suite of initiatives responding to the global financial crisis – including training and mentoring programs, assistance to 93 businesses through the ‘Growing Creative Business’ program as well as the imminent introduction of business clinics to support micro and small enterprise development.

Council, at yesterday’s special budget meeting, referred SCE’s budget request of $525,000 to the draft 2009/2010 budget for consideration.
