Round Table to focus on financial sustainability

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has accepted an invitation from Local Government Minister David Crisafulli to attend the State Government’s first Regional Round Table in Townsville today (Wednesday) and tomorrow.

The Round Table’s main focus will be on local government financial sustainability, and will be attended by a number of council mayors, CEOs and government representatives including the Minister.

“A number of critical financial challenges confront all councils in today’s economic climate,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“While Sunshine Coast Council is in relatively good shape financially, we cannot stand still in what is a constantly changing economic environment.

“We need to discuss the potential impact of the State Government’s proposed changes to infrastructure charges as a matter of urgency.

“We also need to find the best way of maintaining council assets with limited council resources, and take into account spiralling costs of energy and other utility charges.”

Mayor Jamieson said with about 65% of revenue sourced from general rates it was important to explore and discuss other means of income, from non-traditional council sources and business-based activities.

The Mayor will return in time to welcome Tough Mudder CEO and founder Will Dean from New York at a function on Thursday evening, to be held at Underwater World.
