The new Girraween Cycling Criterium Track at Sunshine Beach is already proving to be a popular sport and recreation facility with a steady flow of traffic since it opened in early November.

Division 11 Councillor Russell Green said the new complex boasts great facilities that cater for a wide range of users.

"It is pleasing to see that the complex has been embraced by the community so quickly," Cr Green said.

"I have received some feedback from the community that with the high usage of the track there have been some near accidents when pedestrians or dogs have wandered onto the track.

"I want to get the message out to the community that we need to ensure that everyone who is using the facility does it in a safe and responsible way so we avoid any possible accidents occurring."

Cr Green said the Girraween Criterium Track is designed to be used by cyclists only.

"The track is free for use by the public except when booked for organised events. We have installed a noticeboard which indicates whether the track is open or closed to the public," he said.

"People can also view the online events calendarto ensure the track is available at the time and date you wish to use it.

"At times when the track is in use by organised cycling events, speeds in excess of 50kph can be reached so it is very important that everyone is familiar with the conditions of use.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to remind the community that dogs are not permitted on playing surfaces and in public places they must be kept on a leash at all times.

"The criterium track is a welcomed new recreation facility and we need to make sure it is also a safe environment for the community to use and enjoy."
