A unique nature-based facility where locals can play, exercise and interact with native flora and fauna is fast taking shape on the Sunshine Coast.
Stage 1 works for the Skippy Park nature based playground at Landsborough are now complete and council is inviting locals to sample the precinct’s amazing attractions at an open day on Saturday 30 July 2011.
The event will showcase the recently completed works that include picnic shelters, barbeques, landscaping and a unique nature based playground for children that includes climbing trees and stepping stones.
A range of activities are planned for the open day, including face painting, balloon sculpting, roving performers and a petting zoo. The Beerwah Lions Club is also set to supply a barbecue lunch.
Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the Federal Government’s Regional Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) had contributed $172,000 towards the $240,000 stage 1 works.
"Council has allocated another $430,000 in capital works funding over the next three years to further develop Skippy Park," she said.
"This precinct is the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast and its features include sports fields, a criterium cycling track, picnic and barbeque areas, natural play spaces for children and of course its natural inhabitants – the kangaroos.
"Future works at Skippy Park include exercise equipment, picnic shelters, entry signage, basketball and soccer half court."
Open day attendees will have the opportunity to have their say on the proposed future stages of the park.
Activities will commence from 11am. Attendees are encouraged to bring along their bikes and dogs on leashes.
