Mayor Abbot will launch world environment day celebrations, 5 June, at the inaugural Living Smart Awards, which recognise the efforts of sustainable champions across the Coast.
The 2009 Living Smart ‘Glossies’ Awards, will be held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre and for the first time, bring the region together in celebrating the community’s sustainable achievements.
The categories recognise,
- Excellence in Sustainable Building
- Resource Savers
- Sustainable Transport Award
- Edible Landscape Award
Mayor Abbot said that the awards are a great way to reward residents and business owners who have made a positive contribution to the Coast’s sustainability.
“The award nominees, off their own backs, have created an environment in their home or business that allows them to make a difference,” Mayor Abbot said.
“Our vision as a council, to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s most sustainable region, will only be possible, with the inclusion of the community.
“We can provide the support and the programs for creating a sustainable region, but it is the changes made at the personal level, that will really help us achieve our vision.”
The Awards have received tremendous support through generous Gold Sponsorship from Conics (Sunshine Coast Pty Ltd), Visy Recycling and Qld Govt Dept Transport & Main Roads.
Guest speaker Sidonie Carpenter, President of Green Roofs Australia will share her experiences, knowledge and wisdom in creating sustainable roof and wall solutions.
Green roofs can reduce air pollution and offer an untapped resource for the production of organics, food as well as providing pleasant green spaces in cityscapes.
The awards ceremony will officially launch the world environment day celebrations. Those wishing to attend the ceremony should contact council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272 by 1 June 2009.
