Mayor Jamieson and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie will welcome more than 4000 paddlers and supporters at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Australian Dragon Boat Championships at Sunshine Coast Council’s Stockland Park, Lake Kawana on Tuesday, April 15.

Queensland crews will paddle a dragon boat flotilla of ten Flag Bearers to shore, to initiate the five day event and  lead into the spectacular Opening Ceremony. The ceremony will involve Monks, Taiko Drummers and dignitaries taking part in the ‘Dotting of the Eyes’ for the awakening of the Dragon.

The best paddlers from across the country, representing each of the states and territories, as well as two teams from New Zealand, will battle for five days at one of the best venues of its kind in Australia. It will be State versus State with New Zealand thrown into the potent mix. The action will be fast and furious with records expected to tumble.

Boats will race over 200m, 500m and 2000m courses in divisions ranging from juniors through to masters: seniors A, B and C.

Dragon Boating is the fastest growing team water sport in the world, with an estimate of nearly fifty million people participating in the sport annually.
