Sporting sponsorships set to surge

Some of the Sunshine Coast’s signature sporting events are set to be bigger and better in 2011.

This week Sunshine Coast Council endorsed an injection of $85,000 in sponsorship to support five events which are expected to attract visitors and wealth to the region.

All sponsorship applications received as Round Two of the Major Events Sponsorship program were reviewed and assessed by a Major Events Advisory Panel with recommendations getting a stamp of approval by Council today.

The successful events announced today include:

2011 Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival
2011 Holden Scramble Championship Final
2011 AFL Masters National Carnival
2011 Kings of the Coast Caloundra Ocean Swim
2011 Sail Mooloolaba

These events will be staged or commenced in the first half of 2011.

Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Lew Brennan said today’s announcement acknowledges the importance that Council’s Major Events Sponsorship Program places on the contribution that these events make to the economic development of the region.

“Sponsorship of these five events demonstrates Council’s commitment to building a robust economy and a sustainable tourism industry,” he said.

“Supporting event organisers and working in partnership with peak tourism entities to promote these kinds of events, helps market our region and its destinations.

“The increased media exposure outside the region will encourage greater visitation and destination promotion.”

The sponsorship package announced today takes Council’s contribution from the Tourism Levy to $1.3M for 2010/2011 financial year.

Applications for Sponsorship were assessed against agreed criteria, based on Events Queensland methodology and elements of Council’s Corporate Plan, and addressed issues such as economic, marketing and social benefits to the Sunshine Coast region, environmental impact and youth involvement.
