Squash club granted a revamp

Nambour’s North Coast Squash and Social Club is keen to show off their newly refurbished squash courts, partly funded by a Sunshine Coast Council Community Grant.

After the club’s old building in Doolan Street was sold, a council grant of $5334 helped to refurbish three squash courts at the Nambour PCYC.

The refurbishment included rendering, painting and new floors.

Helen Gillies, a club member for over 20 years, said the club could not have continued without the council grant and assistance from the PCYC.

"We were very grateful to council after we received the grant – it was devastating when we lost our place at Doolan Street and then the courts at the PCYC really needed some work," Ms Gillies said.

"I think it’s fantastic that council supports the Sunshine Coast sporting community through the grants program. Sport is such an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle, and our members were thrilled that they could continue playing squash.

"Now is a great time for people to come along for a game and check out the other facilities at the PCYC while they’re here."

Alison Hamblin, council Community Sports and Facility Planning Manager, agreed that sport is an integral part of the Sunshine Coast community.

"Local sporting organisations play a vital role in our community and it is important that council works with these clubs to help them encourage participation," said Ms Hamblin.

"High quality facilities make it easier for these groups to attract new players. Council’s Community Grants Program provides funding opportunities to help improve the sustainability of sport and recreation clubs.

"We also direct sports clubs to other funding opportunities, such as State and Federal Government grants, including the Gambling Community Benefit Fund."The current minor round of Community Grants closes on 1 June at 5pm. Community organisations can apply for grants of up to $2000. The next major round will open in July and close on 1 September.
