Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project takes off

Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed the finalisation of the terms of reference for Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion.

Mayor Jamieson said the decision by Queensland’s Co-ordinator General means the airport can get on with the job.

"This is another important step for the airport expansion, which will create thousands of jobs and strengthen our economy for decades to come," Cr Jamieson said.

"Work will soon start on studies needed for the much-anticipated Airport Expansion Project – including the new east-west runway.

"The EIS will review social, economic and environmental impacts of the expansion project so they can be assessed by the State and Commonwealth governments.

"We anticipate construction of the new runway could start by around 2015 with the new runway operational by around 2020.

"Of course that’s subject to approval of the EIS, and funding – this is why council will continue to work hard to get financial backing for the project.

"The expansion project will ensure the airport can meet growth while also creating jobs, stimulating the economy, improving airport services and reducing disruptions.

"The Sunshine Coast tourism sector is also set to benefit because the longer runway will open up new destinations around Australia and overseas."
