Director of Community Services Coralie Nichols said the increase in prize money had attracted an increase in entries from across Australia.

“We have already received more entries than at the same time last year, and with new entries flooding in each day, it’s going to be a big job for this year’s judges,” Ms Nichols said.
“We are thrilled to announce esteemed arts writer, curator and educator Jane Deeth as one of our judges for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016.

“Jane has many years of experience as curator of the Glover Prize and director of New Audiences for Art, an organisation that works with the museum and art gallery sector to develop its capacity to bring art to new audiences.

“We look forward to announcing our second judge and the forty finalists, from which the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 winner will be selected, in May.
“The winner will be announced at the official exhibition opening on Friday, September 2.”

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 offers a prize pool of more than $35,000 including:

  • an acquisitive major prize of $25,000 cash sponsored by Audi Centre Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, plus an artist studio residency sponsored by Montville Country Cabins;
  • a non-acquisitive highly commended prize of $5000 sponsored by the Proost-De Deyne family;
  • a non-acquisitive people’s choice prize of $2500 sponsored by Caloundra Chamber of Commerce.

Online entries close at 5pm on Friday, April 15.

The 40 finalists will be showcased at the Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition to be held at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 18 to October 2. The winning artwork will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.
