A team of six Sunshine Coast Council employees have beaten teams from around Australia and New Zealand at the Local Government Professional Association (LGPA) Australasian Management Challenge in Melbourne.

The professional development challenge attracts hundreds of local governments annually – it aims to help maintain and promote problem solving, team work and leadership skills within the workplace. Second and third place were awarded to the City of Darwin and the City of Dunedin respectively.

Sunshine Coast Council Acting CEO Greg Laverty said the team was a credit to council and represented the organisation with utmost professionalism.

“I would like to congratulate our team on their achievement of being named the best in Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Laverty said.

“We are very proud of the staff who participated in the challenge and commend their outstanding efforts.

“As part of the challenge the team prepared a group presentation promoting the Sunshine Coast and the work of council – a task made easier by the number of game-changing projects council has underway and our beautiful region.

“They also presented a case study on the use of technology to develop and support a modern, mobile and flexible workforce, which is a priority for council as an employer.

“The challenge was a great opportunity for local governments to work together too – our team helped develop solutions for, and provided feedback on, issues other councils may be faced with.

“The techniques and skills our staff learned throughout the challenge can now be passed on throughout the rest of the organisation, which will help us provide a quality service to the Sunshine Coast community.”

Council’s team were crowned Queensland champions – ahead of 16 other teams – before competing in the Australasian challenge.
