  • Monday 04 April 2016
Heart Week 2016With free bike rides, stand up paddle boarding, walking, cooking demonstrations, jumping castle and face painting, there’s something for everyone at the Sunshine Coast Heart Week 2016 Expo at council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre from 8am to noon on Saturday, April 30.

Community Services Director Coralie Nichols said council has partnered with the health and wellbeing sector to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during Heart Week.

“The inaugural Sunshine Coast Heart Week 2016 Expo on April 30 kicks off a week-long program of events across the region,” she said.

“The community is invited to join ‘Happy Heart’ and the Heart Foundation Walkers at 8am for a leisurely walk around Lake Kawana.

“Residents and visitors can then head into Lake Kawana Community Centre and talk to health and well-being experts on a broad range of topics.

“There will be cooking demonstrations, educational resources and food ideas for healthy eating, a pump for healthy heart bike challenge, stand up paddle boarding, vascular health checks, group fitness classes, whip up a free smoothie on the pedal-powered Smoothie Bike, learn circus skills and so much more.

“Starting at 8.30am we have been very fortunate to have secured high calibre health and wellbeing experts who will run a Q & A specialist presentation.

“This is a rare opportunity for people to hear first-hand from specialists such as Professor Kim Greaves, Director of Cardiac Research, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services and Associate Professor Chris Askew, Head of the VasoActive Research Group and Senior Research Fellow, University of the Sunshine Coast to name a few.

“The presentations will culminate in a panel discussion by health experts at 11.30am on the topic, Healthy Hearts for Life.

“Also just by attending the Expo, the community can enter the draw to win over $1000 in prizes.”

Ms Nichols said the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 outlined council’s priorities in building a stronger community.

“One of the strategy’s four aims is to ensure the Sunshine Coast maintains its number one ranking as the healthiest region in Queensland,” Ms Nichols said.

“The inaugural Sunshine Coast Heart Week 2016 program strives to build on this vision and will aim for the Sunshine Coast to become one of the healthiest regions in Australia.”
