Surf heritage on show at Caloundra
  • Tuesday 24 December 2013

Don’t miss the opportunity to reminisce about the early 1970s surfing culture at the art and film installation Sons of Beaches 72 on display at Sunshine Coast Council’s Caloundra Regional Gallery until 2 February 2014.

Sons of Beaches 72 charts the development of the important pro-surfing movement that rose from the Gold Coast in the early 1970s, highlighting the short-board revolution in Australia. This exhibition includes locally-sourced surfing memorabilia which focuses on the 1972 World Amateur Titles in San Diego and features documentary interviews with the 1972 Australia team.

Featured alongside the exhibition, Caloundra Regional Gallery will display works from the Sunshine Coast Corporate Art Collection that explore surfing culture on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

While visiting the gallery make sure you head next door to the Caloundra Library to see a heritage exhibition of local well-known surfing couple Ma (Majorie) and Pa (Charles Ben) Bendall who were regarded as surfing legends who settled in Caloundra in the 1950s.

The Events Centre Caloundra also joins in the precinct celebrations with the Surfing the Decades exhibition which features a fascinating display of classic boards and memorabilia from 15 January to 5 February 2014 that will resound with past legends through to young surfers of today. Some of the boards include the original wooden planks, twin fins, swallow tails, retro and those of current champions that map the evolution of size, style and shape of boards as well as the stories that go with them.
