Sustainable living in spotlight

Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging residents to seek tips from those in the know when it comes to sustainable living on the Sunshine Coast this Sunday 9 September.

Sustainable House Day is an annual Australia-wide event aimed at raising awareness of sustainable living and showcasing some of the nation’s most sustainable homes to the public.

A free Design for Climate workshop, funded by council’s Living Smart program, will be held as part of the event at the Blue House, Yandina Community Gardens.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said council had supported the Design for Climate talk and workshops for the past four years and encouraged people to make the most of the sustainable living knowledge and skills on offer.

"Sustainable House Day promotes sustainable living options on the Sunshine Coast and recognises those already making a great contribution to sustainability through their daily lifestyle choices, decisions and actions," Cr Wellington said.

"The Living Smart Design for Climate presentation is a great opportunity for anyone who is building, thinking of building, retrofitting, or simply wants to know the basics of efficient and functional design."

People are encouraged to bring their own house plans, designs or land site maps to the workshop so they can talk to the building designer or energy assessors about their own home.

Cr Wellington said council had encouraged finalists and winners from housing design categories in the annual Glossies awards program to participate in Sustainable House Day by opening their homes to share their journey with others.

"The open homes provide a great opportunity for people to get ideas and advice on greener living, contributing to a sustainable future for our region," Cr Wellington said.

"People can get a first hand look at houses where sustainability has been the main focus in the design, building or fit out of the home.

"It also showcases the commitment of local residents to creating and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle."

The Design for Climate workshop will be held from 10am to 12pm at the Blue House, 41 Farrell Street Yandina Community Gardens and a number of sustainable homes will be open across the region from 10am to 4pm.
