TAFE and council partnership set to deliver a Healthy Sunshine Coast

ImageA new partnership between Sunshine Coast Council and TAFE Queensland East Coast will see fitness students deliver free Healthy Sunshine Coast physical activity classes at Sippy Downs from October to December.

Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said one of the key targets of council’s Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 is for the region to maintain its number one ranking as the healthiest in Queensland.

“A key initiative from the strategy is to develop partnerships and programs that help our residents undertake physical activity and lead healthy lifestyles,” Cr Dickson said.

“Taking part in regular physical activity is important for everyone’s health. Unfortunately most Australians aren’t getting the required recommended physical activity they need.

“I am pleased to announce TAFE Queensland East Coast Certificate III and IV in Fitness and Diploma of Sport Development students, under the instruction of their teacher, will deliver two weekly free outdoor group exercise classes at Windmill Park, Sippy Downs for 10 consecutive weeks beginning Tuesday, October 4.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to obtain practical ‘hands on’ experience during their studies.

“So if you are keen to start getting active in spring but not sure where to start, Healthy Sunshine Coast is a great option.”

TAFE Queensland East Coast fitness teacher Paul Barr said living a healthy lifestyle was important for everyone and the student instructors were excited to be a part of a healthy Sunshine Coast.

“We are teaching our students how to help people lead happier and healthier lives. When we look after our physical health, we feel better – we’re fitter, more relaxed and able to cope with whatever life throws at us,” Mr Barr said.

“Our students are capable, confident and caring and the Healthy Sunshine Coast program will provide them with the ultimate hands-on training experience as we assess them in real-world situations.

“TAFE students learn advanced skills in anatomy and physiology, injury prevention and management and nutrition and can’t wait to put their skills to the test and help people in our local community.”
