Clear skies, warm temps and larger than average waves are forecast for Sunshine Coast beaches this Easter long weekend and council is urging locals and visitors to take extra care in and around the water.

Local Disaster Management Coordinator Andrew Ryan said some decent 3-4ft swells were expected in the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Ita, that tracked down the Queensland coast last week.

“Rips, currents and freak waves are always a danger on surf beaches and particularly in the wake of a cyclone,” he said.

“So if you’re heading to the beach, be alert, pay attention to lifeguards and always swim only between the flags.

“We hope everyone enjoys their Easter break but it’s important that people don’t drop their guard.”
