Task Force meets to address housing affordability issues
  • Thursday 25 September 2008

The Housing Affordability Task Force has elected Sunshine Coast Regional Council Division One Councillor Anna Grosskreutz as its inaugural chair.

The appointment came at the Task Force’s first meeting held last Wednesday at the Lake Kawana Community Centre.

Cr Grosskreutz, who also holds Council’s Social Strategy portfolio, said the meeting was another step towards addressing one of the most significant issues facing the Sunshine Coast.

“It was an excellent session, with full attendance by the newly-appointed task force members,’’ Cr Grosskreutz said.

“We’ve got a great team of people involved, all committed to helping develop strategies to address the need for crisis accommodation, social housing and housing affordability across our region.”

In other key outcomes from the meeting, the Task Force:

  • Acknowledged the housing crisis on the Sunshine Coast and the need for a collaborative approach between not-for-profit organisations and the development industry.
  • Recognised the need to get outcomes that could result in policy change or guidelines for sustainable housing; and
  • Agreed on the need to focus on more than just building houses, to also consider the provision of services, transport, efficient design, etc.

Cr Grosskreutz said the Task Force encourages other members of the community to become involved. Anyone interested can contact the Sunshine Coast Regional Council on 5420 8944 during business hours.
