The ‘Icon Man’ at the Caloundra Music Festival
  • Thursday 21 August 2008

Roy Ayers, affectionately referred to as the ‘Icon Man’ in hip hop circles, will join Aussie music heavyweights Pete Murray, Vanessa Amorosi, Ian Moss, The Whitlams, Lior, Jackson Jackson and Kate Miller Heidke at this year’s Caloundra Music Festival.

Vibraphonist and vocalist, Ayers is among the best-known, most-loved and respected jazz and R&B artists on today’s music scene.

According to Festival Director Richie Eyles, Ayers continues to bridge the gap between generations of music lovers.

“Roy Ayers is well known as the Godfather of Neo-soul. In the 60s he was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist, then transformed into a popular R&B bandleader in the 70s and 80s,” Mr Ayers said.

Ayers recently recorded with hip-hop artist Talib Kweli (produced by Kanye West) and jazz/R&B singer Will Downing. Many of Ayers’ songs, including Everybody Loves the Sunshine, Searchin, and Running Away have been frequently sampled and remixed by DJs worldwide.

“Roy Ayers is an absolute legend and it will be a real treat to have such a quality international artist here in Caloundra.”

The festival, which kicks of on Friday 17 October at the Kings Beach, is promising to be a great family friendly event with an impressive line-up of Australian and international talent.

Discounted tickets are available until 31 August - $89 for an adult weekend pass, or $65 for concessions. VIP passes and family passes are also available. For more information visit
