The Sunshine Coast’s 44 Locality Snapshots unveiled
  • Monday 22 November 2010

Sunshine Coast Council today launched the 44 Locality Snapshots which have been created to understand and celebrate the vibrant and diverse communities that make up the region.

The Locality Snapshots combine local knowledge with population statistics, maps, photos, and key community spaces and places, telling a story about the character and identity of each of the 44 local areas across the Sunshine Coast.

The snapshots are now available on council's website and in hard copy format from council’s libraries and customer service centres.

Social Strategy Portfolio holder councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the Locality Snapshots provided a brief snapshot in time of the current look, feel and character of each locality and what makes them unique.

"By investigating and understanding what makes each of the 44 localities across the region different and interesting, the Locality Snapshots really showcase the ‘community of communities’ that makes up the Sunshine Coast," Cr Grosskreutz said.

"The snapshots will provide residents with new and interesting information about their own community as well as offering an insight into all of the 44 unique communities that make up our Sunshine Coast. We encourage locals to explore all of the diverse communities here in our beautiful, vibrant region."

The snapshots feature important local information from a number of recent council surveys including Community Neighbourhood Survey 2010, Sunny Coast Youth Survey 2010 and Creative Communities Survey 2010.

"To ensure the snapshots reflected the character and identity of each of the localities, we consulted with the local communities and drew information from a number of recent council surveys," Cr Grosskreutz.

The Locality Snapshots will form background information for key council planning documents including the Community Plan, new planning scheme and Place Making Charter, as they support people-based planning.

The snapshots have many uses including:

  • school assignments
  • visitor information
  • local business planning
  • grant applications and
  • general community use.

More information regarding local area profiles and statistics is also available on council's Community Profile website.
