Gateway to the Soul: Alfred Umbagai by Tessa McOnie

An eye-catching artwork entitled Gateway to the Soul: Alfred Umbagai by Tessa McOnie has won the 2014 Sunshine Coast Art Prize Peoples’ Choice Award.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2014 exhibition attracted over 2500 visitors to Caloundra Regional Gallery as well as sponsorship valued at almost $70,000 and interest from media across the country.

“Tessa McOnie won the People’s Choice Prize of $2,500 for receiving the most votes from visitors to the exhibition and from online polling at the gallery website,” Cr Dwyer said.

“All visitors to the exhibition in person at the gallery or online at Council’s website had the opportunity to nominate their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice Award presented by category sponsor - the Friends of Caloundra Regional Gallery Inc.

“For voting for their favourite artwork, S. Buchanan was drawn as the lucky winning vote to win five nights’ accommodation at the Beachcomber on the Spit Mooloolaba to the value of up to $1000.”

Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the second Sunshine Coast Art Prize Auction held on Sunday, October 26 was a great success with 50 people enjoying a lovely relaxed Garden Luncheon prior to the Auction.

“The Art Prize Auction provided a unique and exciting opportunity for art enthusiasts, interior designers, art collectors, and those wishing to invest in art to obtain contemporary Australian artworks,” Cr McKay said.

“The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is produced by Sunshine Coast Council to encourage artistic excellence and to bring quality artwork to a regional audience and while this year’s exhibition is now closed, I am certain the 2015 program, which will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this prestigious Art Prize, will not disappoint.”

Caloundra Regional Gallery is owned and operated by Sunshine Coast Council and is located at 22 Omrah Avenue Caloundra and open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
