Transport headed in right direction

An important building block for the future commercial heart of the Sunshine Coast was laid in Maroochydore today with the turning of the first sod on the city’s modern new bus station.

Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said he was pleased to be part of this significant event.

“The new Maroochydore CBD is becoming the commercial heart of this region – and this new bus station will ensure public transport can grow to meet the expected demand,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Council is proud to have provided $2.5 million towards the Maroochydore Bus Station and thanks the State Government for providing the bulk of the funding.”

Cr Baberowski said the new bus station was part of a wider program to improve sustainable transport options on the Sunshine Coast.

“The Maroochydore bus station will provide better access to services for passengers, improve timetable reliability for all buses servicing the area and provide capacity for future public transport growth,” said Cr Baberowski.

“The improved services and the safe, high-quality waiting facilities, will encourage more people in our region to use public transport and reduce congestion in Maroochydore.

“This project also highlights the importance of strong working relationships between the state government and council.”

Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray said council’s contribution to the streetscaping and landscape design would ensure the new station adds to the coastal look and feel of Maroochydore.

“The high quality urban design will continue the theme already on Cornmeal Creek and Cliff Butt Promenade to create a pleasant arrival for workers, shoppers and visitors,” said Cr O’Pray.

“When it’s finished and the public art pieces and mature trees are in place, this project will reinforce Maroochydore’s reputation as a modern and vibrant business hub.”

The existing bus station will remain operational until the new bus platforms are opened towards the end of construction in October 2013 (weather permitting).
