TravelSmart wants to set light to your bike

Council is inviting residents to enter a Christmas lights competition with a difference—light up yourself or your bike for a chance to win.

The competition, held on Friday 18 December in Noosaville Lions Park, is a fun and active way for families to get into the Christmas spirit.

After the judging, participants are encouraged to take part in a 2-8km walk or cycle to watch the Christmas Boat Flotilla at Noosa Waters.

TravelSmart coordinator Jo Ferris said the competition followed by the ride would be a great healthy way to get in the festive spirit.

“Firstly, we’ll be giving prizes to the best decorated bike and rider and to the best decorated pedestrian,” Ms Ferris said.

“There are some great prizes up for grabs, including CamelBak hydration packs, bike pumps, gloves, helmets, locks and backpacks as well as a TravelSmart gift bag for all entrants.

“Then, still dressed for Christmas, participants will walk or ride to watch the Noosa Waters Residents Association’s Christmas Boat Flotilla.

“The ride to watch the boats will take various routes, varying from 2-8km, over mainly flat terrain.

“Anyone planning to ride on the night is required by law to have at least one fixed white light, which can be viewed from the front and a flashing red light to be seen from the rear.

“The flotilla starts at 6.30pm, leaving from the park on the corner of Shorehaven Drive and Saltwater Avenue, and finishing at the water fountain on the corner of Riverbreeze Avenue and Mermaid Quay.

“Maps with suggested bike/walking routes and other flotilla information will be available from the TravelSmart stall at the Noosaville/Tewantin Lions Park,” Ms Ferris said.

Both cyclists and pedestrians will be required to make their own way to the various vantage points within Noosa Waters.

Appropriate lights for night riding are required as lighting along pathways may not be sufficient. Reflective or bright coloured clothing is recommended.
