Council is calling Sunshine Coast under 18s to enter “Nature at Play” a junior photo competition designed to encourage exploration of nature and to showcase our young people’s connection to the Sunshine Coast environment.

Budding photographers have the opportunity to win prizes that include the chance to be a seal trainer for a day, a family yacht cruise and vouchers up to $350.

The project, which opens Monday, is a great opportunity to focus on getting out to play and having fun in the great outdoors.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the competition was another example of Council driving sustainability within the community through its Living Smart program.

“Our youth will be our best environmental ambassadors going forward—the more we can engage with them, the more chance we have of protecting and enhancing our environment into the future.

“Great things happen when people are passionate and this is just one way we’re trying to harness the ideas and the passion of youth,” Cr McKay said.

Photos can be submitted in the following categories and must be taken within the Sunshine Coast local council area:

  • Native plants and animals of the Sunshine Coast
  • Creepy crawlies such as bugs and spiders of the Sunshine Coast
  • Native landscapes, including waterways of the Sunshine Coast
  • People outdoors enjoying nature

Entries close July 24 at 5pm, finalists are announced July 31 and winning and runners-up entries will be exhibited from  October 10  to  November 1 at the Arts and Ecology Centre, Maroochy Botanic Gardens.
