Imagine for a moment what it would be like if you were unable to physically access your local library to spend hours browsing through the shelves of thousands of books and resources.
Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Home Library Service, residents, who for a variety of reasons are unable to physically access their local library across the region, can have materials delivered to their doorstep.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council’s Home Library Service relies on the support of volunteers and the Maroochydore Branch is currently in urgent need of additional volunteers.
“This valuable community service supports social inclusion and ensures that local residents have access to the resources and services of a public library, regardless of their circumstances,” she said.
“Volunteers select, deliver and return library materials on behalf of a Home Library customer who resides in the Maroochydore area.
“As well as obtaining the satisfaction of delivering this service to members of the Maroochydore community, volunteers also provide valuable social contact for these residents who may go days without any face-to-face contact with the outside world.
“Through this service, volunteers make a significant contribution to the community by enriching the lives of these library members.”
One of the current Maroochydore Home Library Service volunteers, Benjie Bartos said checking out materials from the library for free is one of my favourite things to do on the weekend.
“Imagine all of the homebound community members who want access to books, music and films too, but are unable to get them,” she said.
“Being a volunteer with the Home Library Service is a fun and rewarding way to help these people take advantage of all the library services.”
If you are an existing customer of Maroochydore Library and would be interested in delivering library materials once a month to a Home Library borrower, please contact Maroochydore Library on 1300 542 727 or visit council’s library website to find out more.
