Warning to residents

Residents are urged to be aware of a possible scam involving a bogus council letter found circulating on the Sunshine Coast.

An example of a letter addressed to ‘the occupier’ was found in an Alexandra Headland residential letterbox and handed into Sunshine Coast Council yesterday.

The letter advised of council officers undertaking routine property inspections and indicates the property is a ‘severe fire danger’.

It also advises that gutters need cleaning and should the problem not be rectified, council officers will address the matter ‘at a cost to you’.

The fake letter is not on council letterhead, features an old Sunshine Coast Regional Council logo and is signed by a false name without an officer title.

Council does not inspect properties for fire hazards nor does it clean properties on behalf of private owners.

Any resident who is, or has been, approached by a person claiming to be a council officer under these circumstances should contact police and council immediately.
