After meeting only twice, Sunshine Coast Council’s newly selected YTEAM has already identified ways of improving delivery of youth-friendly services and programs on the Coast.
Community Engagement and Governance Portfolio holder Christian Dickson, who spent time with the 13 youth coordinators, said they spent two days working on group building activities, learning community engagement tools and techniques, and discussing issues and ideas.
“By the end of the two days, the team had selected the theme of their first project, which will be entertainment,” Councillor Dickson said.
“They will now break into project teams to gather information and research the needs and interests of young people living on the Coast in relation to entertainment.
“They will meet every fortnight to further develop their research questions, identify target groups, select appropriate community engagement tools, identify resources and community partners and develop their youth engagement projects,” he said.
The team members, who come from across the Coast, were selected as part of a project called Change Your World – funded by the Department of Communities – which will provide them with training in community engagement.
Other outcomes of the project are:
• A Youth Engagement Framework to guide council on how to better involve young people in decision-making processes
• Research data that will be used to inform a Youth Strategy focusing on the priorities for programs, policies and council’s role in supporting young people.
